BIOGRAPHY
I make etchings for many reasons but certainly because
I love to draw, because of the element of surprise in pulling a print,
and the richness that is very hard to obtain in other mediums. Intaglio's
rich tone and delicate lines continually captivate me, as does the dichotomy
of these fragile lines against the rich, dark tonal areas of aquatints.
I often add spots of transparent watercolor.
Nature is sometimes juxtaposed with man made forms in my work. These dreamlike
images emerge in a Northwest mist. The rain - I find it hard to live anywhere
else without this envelope of softness that surrounds us in our lushly
foliaged landscape. I like to visit other areas of the country but they
seem, in the end, too harsh and leave me feeling overexposed. Here in
rainy Portland, one feels protected. My work has some inexplicable dream
elements that are mysterious even to me, as dreams are. Images are encountered
daily and some I take and others I filter out.
I'm strongly attracted to decaying architecture - especially older buildings
with crumbling columns, verandahs, and arches. I'm equally fascinated
with long legged shore birds, especially the ones that have an oddity
to them like unusual beaks or odd stances. Other creatures like fish and
butterflies also fascinate me.
I was born in Vancouver, Washington and have lived in the Portland metro
area most of my life except for getting my BFA at the University of Washington
in Seattle and a brief time in Eugene and Salem. I started doing art when
I was very small. I spent a lot of time drawing on a black chalkboard,
getting the image just right, and then I'd erase it and start drawing
another. My artist-sister influenced me a lot and my grandmother was an
artist too so art just seemed logical for me.
I make my etchings at Inkling Studio. My work is in the collections of
the Alexis Hotel (Seattle and Portland), Arthur Anderson, City of Portland,
Idaho First National Bank in Boise, Multnomah County, OHSU, Oregon Department
of Transportation, State Office Building, S.E. Regional Correctional Institute,
Juneau, Alaska, Museu de Gravura, Brazil and many private collections.
My work can be seen at the Northwest Print Council, The Rental Sales Gallery
of the Portland Art Museum, and in various shows in the Northwest.
