ARTISTS
BIO
John Saling was born in Portland, Oregon in 1943. He graduated
from the Cornish School of Art in Seattle in 1965 and studied printmaking
at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit, Michigan. He learned engraving
from David Finkbinder at Pratt Graphics Arts Center in New York City from
1971-1973.
John has been a member of Inkling Studios since 1983 and of the Northwest
Print Council since 1986 serving as its president from 1994-1996. John
contributed the design for the Council's logo. He has taught printmaking
classes at the Pacific Northwest College of Art, Sitka Center for Art
and Ecology in Oregon, and Portland State University where he organized
the National Copper Engravers Invitational in 1992 at the Littman Gallery.
His single and group shows span from 1983 to the present. John is represented
in the Portland Art Museum Rental Sales Gallery, in private collections
in Japan and Spain and in the National Museum of Taiwan.
Examples of his engravings representing figurative, landscape, and symbolic
work are included on this website.
